Why We Use Reishi

For our nighttime blend, Reishi was the natural choice. Often referred to as the “Spirit Mushroom” or “Divine Mushroom,” Reishi is the Japanese name for a species of Ganoderma. It has long been used in traditional Chinese and Japanese medicine to promote restful sleep, reduce stress, and calm the mind.

Today, Reishi mushrooms are known for their adaptogenic qualities, helping the body manage stress and transition more easily into rest. Many people now include Reishi in their bedtime routines, and Moksha’s chocolate provides a delicious and intentional way to do so.

Like all functional mushrooms, Reishi also contains fungal beta-glucans, which are valued for their wellness-supporting properties.

Finding the right flavor balance took time. After many test batches, we arrived at our ideal formulation: a 65% dark mylk chocolate made with:

  • Single-origin cacao and cocoa butter, stone-ground for five days
  • Organic Reishi mushroom powder and extract from the whole fruiting body
  • Organic coconut milk and coconut sugar to create a creamy texture and natural caramel notes

This careful process allows Reishi’s beneficial compounds to fully integrate while preserving the flavor integrity of the chocolate.

How Moksha Reishi Chocolate Is Made

Each Moksha bar begins in our Boulder, Colorado factory. We start by stone-grinding ethically sourced cacao and organic cocoa butter. Next, we incorporate whole-fruiting body Reishi mushroom powder and a concentrated extract. Finally, we add organic coconut sugar.

The blend is ground for five full days, enhancing both texture and nutrient availability. The end result is a deeply flavorful inclusion bar designed to relax the body and soothe the mind.
